Technology Rocks

I love to see technology used as an engaging tool in the classroom. It has come such a long way in the last ten years in the areas of speed and content. The interactivity for kids is outstanding. Websites like Brainpop and United Streaming allow teachers to engage kids in discussion using great video. I recommend a laptop, projector, and speakers. A lot can be done to really keep kids interested and engaged in instruction from pre k to 12.

What are ways that you use technology to engage kids. What are some of your frustrations. Let's help each other out.

Meet the Teacher Night

Tonight is our annual Meet the Teacher Night. We're trying somethig a little different this year to encourage parents to attend. We've found that trying to get parents actively involved in their child's education can be somewhat difficult... soo... We're raffling off a color TV. This idea first was presented to me by Rebecca Dufour ("Getting Started", "Whatever it Takes") so had mentioned it being a great motivator to get parents to an event. Some of my staff members seem to think it's a little ridiculous but I'm optomistic. I'm expecting a crowd.

We're also offering child care. We're using the projector to show a movie in the gym. It's so important that our teachers get an opportunity to "sell" their classrooms to parents. This is their opportunity to get parents on board with what they are doing in their rooms. It's also a great chance to secure volunteers.

How many of you are doing Meet the Teacher Nights or Open Houses. What are some ideas you have to improve attendance?

Well it's Friday and we made it. The first week had some excitement both good and frustrating. I have already had to restrain a child for about 90 min. This is a tough thing to do "emotionally". It's frustrating. Seems like there isn't much good that can come from it.

On another note, there are so many things I want to do this year with technology. Skype, Epals, are two great examples of things that Alan November refers to as necessities for the 21st century classroom. What are some things that some of you other principals are doing?
